Assam Assembly passes UCC Bill, CM Sarma calls it ‘most secular, uniform and progressive law’
With the passage of the proposed legislation, Assam has now emerged as the third state, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill.
After securing a historic third straight mandate in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday stepped down as the Chief Minister, clearing the path for a new government to take charge, with the swearing-in expected after May 11.
Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan, formally initiating the process of government formation. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government assumes office.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the resignation, along with that of the Council of Ministers, was submitted following the formal notification of the election results to facilitate the formation of the new government.

As per media reports, the oath-taking ceremony is likely to take place after May 11 in Guwahati. The formal process will begin after the BJP Legislature Party meeting, where the leader of the legislative party will be elected.
Also, caretaker CM of Assam, Himanta Sarma has invited the Prime Minister to grace the swearing-in ceremony of the new government.

The development follows a decisive victory for the BJP-led NDA in the Assam Assembly elections, securing a third consecutive term in the state. The BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark.
The result reinforces the party’s dominance in Assam and deals a significant setback to the opposition, with party leaders terming the mandate as a reflection of public confidence in its governance and development agenda.
